First Five Fragments for Friday – Solstice Edition

Your weekly offering of writing/art prompts.

1. Always intrigued by the idea of the solstice, by celebrations of the longest day, summer bonfires, gardens, and the positions of the stars. So, naturally, I looked it up: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/06/130621-summer-solstice-2013-longest-day-sun-earth-space-science/

2. Would you rather have midnight sun or a long tunnel of night?

3. Between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. a line of thunderstorms rolled through my area. At one point, the flash and sound were simultaneous; windows shook, the bedroom was illuminated in blue light. I could not ignore the urge to get up, throw open the living room curtains, and watch. Who would want to sleep through such a display?

4. Is your favorite summer activity now anything like your favorite summer activity when you were ten years old?

5. The older I get, the more poignant summer feels and time swirls away from me like mist.

And your summery fragments are….?

Happy Solstice.

  1. Yesterday I was up at 4:45 am — it was daylight of course and I was too warm to sleep. I watched a flower open from bud to full petals. Then I got my pad and water colour pencils and drew some garden things and wrote a poem — just as I would have when I was 10! I like being 10. I don't think I want to be any other age 🙂

  2. In answer to #4, Yes. Reading is still a favorite activity. Reading and writing. I also liked to draw, which is something I don't do anymore. I've been thinking about getting back into it but I've been so busy studying that it's been hard for me to start anything new.

  3. My favorite summer activity at 10 was staying out until dark, playing. Nowadays I'm usually inside when it gets dark – except to go out and look at the stars.

Hard to believe it's June already, and almost done with June at that. Summer is evaporating.

  4. Your prejudices are showing. We also had a solstice and our days are starting to get longer (fractionally). Winter and summer my favourite activity was and is reading. Gardening comes in close now – which it didn't. Love your Osteospermum. With a passion.

  5. At age 10 I enjoyed playing baseball and chasing girls. It took me eleven years to catch one and I have had the good sense to stay with her for 42 years. Today I watch baseball and…er, what was the question?

  6. Thunder seems to be the theme this weekend. I'll check out that link you left here – thanks for that! We've had cookouts and stuff on the solstice in years past; one that stands out in my memory was also stormy, so we threw open our garage and grilled food for our guests anyway. We had a blast. I'm really hoping the clouds part enough around here to see the super moon that is also supposed to appear this weekend.
