52 Ways to Shift Your Focus: Go Buy Someone a Present

Shift #34: Go Buy Someone a Present
Sometimes I don’t want to shift my focus. Sometimes I just want to wallow in whatever’s going on around me. This is a week like that. We are all surrounded by decorations, music, television specials, packages, etc. Schedules are packed. And I’m hearing some grumbling here and there about it being too much of everything, holiday overload.

To which I say, seriously? You’re alive, you’re functional, and you want to complain that this is just all too much merriment?

Ahem. This is the perfect time to go buy or make someone a present. Why? Because for that little bit of time, you can put yourself into someone else’s shoes, roam around in thoughts  of what someone else would love. Get out of your own head for a while.

That’s exactly what I’ve been doing this week. Thinking about everybody to whom I give Christmas gifts. Gleefully shopping, cooking, wrapping. Remembering why I do what I do. And being really grateful that I can do it.

Today’s post isn’t particularly creative or artsy. My hope is that it’s just a little inspiring in the wake of last Friday’s tragic school shooting. I don’t normally use my blog as a place to talk about current events or polarizing issues. But today I wish everyone would just find the time to give a gift to someone else and sink into the feeling of what it is to honor each other. To spread peace. To be the best human being possible.
